Arcade racers are quietly having a moment

Realistic racing sims are great on a wheel and a big screen. On a phone, tilting and tapping for precise braking is mostly frustration. That's why arcade racers, the ones that don't care about physics, feel so right on mobile.

Neon Drift Rally is my current obsession. Tap to drift, hold to extend, chain corners into a boost that smears the screen into neon. It's ridiculous and it knows it, and the synthwave soundtrack seals the deal.

The genius is in the handling model. Once it clicks — and it took me a few races — you stop thinking about controls and start thinking in lines through corners. That flow state is the whole appeal of racing games, delivered without any simulation baggage.

If you bounced off mobile racing because the controls felt fiddly, try an arcade one. Lower the stakes, raise the speed, and just enjoy going too fast.
